Published on:29 Oct 2017

Cavan Sports Partnership has launched its latest strategy: ‘Sport and activity for life, for all: 2017-2021’

This is the third strategy of Cavan Sports Partnership and is a result of extensive consultation, with the entire community of sports clubs, organisations, community and National Governing Bodies of sport.

At the launch, Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council, Cllr Paddy McDonald, paid tribute to all those involved in promoting sport at local level.

“I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous work undertaken by the huge number of volunteers in the sports clubs and organisations across Cavan. The time and energy these individuals put into their groups every week provides the opportunity for others, in particular young people, to play sport and reap the benefit of being active,” said Cllr McDonald.

Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys, echoed these sentiments, saying it was important that everyone in the country had an opportunity to participate in sports and activities and praised the role of Cavan Sports Partnership staff and local volunteers in making this a reality.

Cavan Sports Partnership is a Sport Ireland initiative, hosted locally by Cavan County Council.

Charged with the implementation of the strategic plan, the board of Cavan Sports Partnership comprises representatives of local statutory and voluntary groups and supports the work of the partnership.

Chairperson of the CSP board John Kearney said, “This strategic plan provides the direction for us to strengthen the work we have been doing and to create even more successful and engaging physical activity programmes for the people of Cavan.”

Highlighting the importance of the strategy for the people of Cavan, Chief Executive Tommy Ryan said sport and recreation provided “a major tool in tackling social exclusion”.

“The potential benefits in terms of quality of life, social connectedness, improved health and mobility throughout our lives cannot be underestimated,” said Mr Ryan.

The plan has three key themes:

1) Build Participation

2) Enhance community capacity and partnerships; and

3) Improve communications and marketing.
