Case Study: Aoife Goman- Couch to 5k participant to Lacken running group member.

Let me start by saying I hadn’t run since primary school. I walked while my sons were at football training. After a while I had reached my top speed while walking and wanted to try running but found it difficult to get started on my own. I didn’t know how to build up my stamina or control my breathing. One length of the track and I would be out of breath and seeing stars.

I joined a Couch to 5K group at the end of 2018 and with the leaders’ guidance after about 11 weeks I completed my first 5K in 38 mins.

Lacken Running Group began as a couch to 5K for people who were interested in running 5K or people who wanted to get back to running in February 2019. I was delighted as I had really enjoyed learning to run and the support of the people I had met and joined straight away. We’ve been running since, doing 5Ks like the Healthy Cavan 5K.

It is a great way to get out and get fresh air. You feel delighted and energised after a run. I find it a great way to clear my head and destress. My blood pressure it back to normal and I always get a good night’s sleep a run.

Covid has meant we can’t meet and train as a group, but the posted plans are easy to follow and we’re training away and looking forward to running together again.
